Ragnar Kjartansson

Kandidat 2019

Ragnar Kjartansson (född 1976 i Reykjavik, Island) började sin karriär med teater, performans och måleri. Men han rör sig fritt mellan olika konstformer, han gör musik till skulptur, målar performativt och omvandlar film till tableaux vivants. Hans fulländade arbete omfattar videoinstallationer baserade på repetitiva strukturer, performanser och serier av plein air målningar. I sin konst analyserar han emotionella lager, sociala dimensioner och motstridiga element som förekommer i vår vardag.

Kjartanssons arbeten återspeglar konsten i dess mångdubbla former. Hans arbeten är ett ode till konsten som sådan men också en exposé. När vi skapar och njuter av musik, teater, film, litteratur och visuell konst art höjs humöret samtidigt som vi undersöker våra mänskliga villkor. Kjartansson överför och transponerar denna osäkra vetenskap från en konstform till en annan genom att citera dess och sin egen historia. Han ger ledtrådar till konstens mekanismer genom att avslöja dess fasad såväl som dess dolda sida. Han utmanar den konstnärliga kreativitetens möjligheter och gränser, och resultatet är en kombination av det underbara och det löjliga. Och dessa två sidor kolliderar hela tiden med varandra – verklighet vs. konst, tvivel vs. hopp. De blockerar varandra, återspeglar varandra eller sammanförs. Ragnar Kjartanssons arbeten visar hur vi hela tiden konstruerar vår verklighet – och samtidigt påminner det lekfulla greppet oss om den njutning som vi får av detta under processen.
