Pauliina Turakka Purhonen

Ehdokas 2014

Born 1971 in Haapavesi, lives and works in Helsinki

Pauliina Turakka Purhonen’s works occupy two worlds. The paintings open up views of things that the artist’s gaze is encountering right here and now: a friend posing for the artist, the piles of stuff in the studio, brushes, dishes, unfinished works… Fabric dolls, in turn, conjure up imaginary views in which angels, dragons and detached heads are mingled with familiar figures from the artist’s life. The working process for a painting is rapid and intensive, while the doll sculptures require slow, steady labour.

How do these two worlds meet? Both involve strictly precise observation. The paintings suspend time and crystalize an atmosphere and a life situation into a sight that the viewer can then access. In the sculptures, meanwhile, images from art history, figures of saints and symbols, are mingled with the everyday. The result is a condensed image in which the viewer can trace universal human emotions. Feelings of fear and pain are also mingled with affectionate laughter. Turakka Purhonen’s works remind the viewer that the border between the inner and the outer is ultimately a shifting one.
