Hans Rosenström

Ehdokas 2015

Hans Rosenström’s artistic expression is by nature immaterial and site-specific. A central feature is the presence of an enigma. In his conceptual works he contemplates the nature of perception, focussing his attention on things that are easily overlooked as being too insignificant. Similarly, light, too, plays an important role. The works cause viewers to doubt their senses, and hence to intensify their alertness to the surrounding reality. In recent years, Rosenström’s primary medium has been sound, along with illusions created using it. The transience and ephemerality are emphasized in his text fragments. In understated situations that come close to being performance art the main role is, however, played by listeners themselves. They are subject more to their own consciousness than to external events. Earphones convey an indeterminate presence, which in various ways puts listeners to the test, and likewise their relationship with their surroundings and themselves. The dividing line becomes blurred, as the sound alternately comes closer and recedes. The result is a contradiction that extends the intensity of the immaterial and the abstract to the point of being physical, too.
