Outi Pieski

Ars Fennica candidate 2015

In her artistic working process Outi Pieski addresses two main themes: nature and Sámi culture. The expressive colour scale of the paintings is dictated above all by the drama of northern light. Her powerfully abstract landscapes evoke luminously fable-like images of the uncontrolled movements of nature. The organically mutable, ornament-like character of the brushstrokes turns the surfaces into jagged fields embroidered with colours. The paintings frequently contain more or less concrete references to the symbolic meanings and handicraft traditions of Sámi culture. The fringes of the shawl that is part of the Sámi costume frame her recent paintings. With this, she ties the paintings to a specific cultural context and gives them a theatrical dimension. In her installations Pieski delineates the essence of light and nature using ethereal structures of yarns and branches. Bone, Sámi handicraft work and ornamented jackets unfold to become imaginary dwelling places. Out of bags of coffee, together with reindeer fur and other materials, there emerges an alternative version of the Sámi costume, translated into the language of contemporary art.
