IC-98 / Patrik Söderlund & Visa Suonpää

Ars Fennica candidate 2014

Patrik Söderlund, b. 1974 in Turku, lives and works in Turku. Visa Suonpää, b. 1968 in Tampere, lives and works in Turku

IC-98 – its members being Patrik Söderlund and Visa Suonpää – is very clearly an artists’ group of the moment. They range across numerous areas of society, and do not see being an artist as a matter of individual performance, or as requiring specialized expertise in a particular discipline. Instead, Söderlund and Suonpää’s art draws on the main methods of early contemporary art, demonstrating that the motive power behind those methods is still effective. IC-98 mingles the acuteness of the language of conceptual art with site-specific art that infiltrates public space and understands the links between the phantasmagoria of social structures and history. In its intellectuality IC-98 represents an exceptional direction in art making in Finland, while, at the same time, reminding us of the artists’ academic background.

Alongside the continuities in IC-98’s fifteen-year career, we can also detect clear changes of subject matter. The group seems increasingly to have gone from analysing ways of controlling public space to taking an apocalyptic approach to the ecocatastrophes caused by humankind. In their brilliant animated cartoons the future appears as very much a product of history, and we are given cause to adopt a complex understand of nature, as a force in all human activities, especially economics.
