Gunnel Wåhlstrand

Ars Fennica candidate 2013

Time and identity span photography and painting

Gunnel Wåhlstrand’s black-and-white paintings are like a reply to the question: What does the past look like? Is it black-and-white, sepia-toned, or do we see it like that because we visualize history through the prism of black-and-white photographs? As the starting point for her large-format ink-wash drawings Wåhlstrand uses photographs from the recent past, some of them of close relatives. Wåhlstrand’s paintings simultaneously comment on the relationship between contemporary painting and photography, but they also say something about the nearly 200-year relationship and interaction between these techniques. The small photographic originals are developed into large-format paintings. Wåhlstrand’s works prompt all manner of questions, since viewers become interested in the painter’s technique and mastery of her tools, but in each case we are also curious to know the identity of the model in the photograph that has served as the work’s starting point, and his or her story. In her works Wåhlstrand mixes the personal and the universal, since, alongside the individual history, we find ourselves pondering the question of how to depict the world and the ambiguity that this entails.
