CANDIDATE 1999
Pasi Karjula
Born 1964 in Virrat, lives in Helsinki.
Pasi Karjula is a highly individual sculptor who uses wood as his material. But he is a spatial, temporal and conceptual artist, who also has some of the characteristics of an environmental artist.
As a wood sculptor, Karjula is a post-informalist who cavorts with formless forms. He has conjured onto the surfaces of his material the marks of touch, of handiwork, and of the sheath knife, the axe and the chainsaw that arise out of the encounter between nature and humanity.
